6 Signs Your Boiler Needs A Repair

Below are some signs you may already be familiar with, while others might be new to you. Regardless, it’s important to take these indicators seriously to ensure the longevity and efficiency of your boiler system.

signs of a boiler repair

Unusual Noises

One of the most common signs of a malfunctioning boiler is the production of unusual noises. If your boiler starts making sounds that you haven't heard before, such as loud banging, kettling noises, or gurgling, it could be a warning sign that something is amiss. These noises may indicate that there is air trapped in the system, sediment build-up, or even a failing component. If you experience any of these sounds, booking a boiler repair with one of our experienced heating engineers is wise.

Cold Water

If you've noticed that your shower is producing only cold water or that the hot water runs out quickly, it may only sometimes be a sign that your boiler needs repair. In some cases, it could simply be that your water tank needs to be refilled. Try switching on the warm water and waiting for the tank to replenish.

However, if you’ve done this and still had no luck, it may be time to investigate further. This issue could indicate a broken airlock or a malfunction in the motorised valve, both of which would require professional assessment and repair.

Cold spots on radiators

Just as with cold water, cold spots on your radiators do not always mean your boiler is malfunctioning. If your radiators are cold even after being switched on, the problem could be as simple as needing to bleed them. You can easily purchase a bleed key from most DIY shops to carry out this process yourself.

While bleeding radiators is a straightforward task, if you find that your radiators constantly require bleeding, it could signal a more serious underlying issue within your boiler or central heating system that needs addressing.

Your Boiler Keeps On Turning Off

If you notice that your boiler keeps turning off unexpectedly, this is a clear indication that something is wrong. A boiler that frequently shuts down is not functioning properly, and this could be due to several reasons, such as a fault with the water pressure, thermostat issues, or a buildup of debris in the system.

Continuous cycling can also lead to increased wear and tear on the components, which could result in more significant issues if not resolved promptly.

Water Leaks

Water leaks are another sign that your boiler might need repair. If you notice water pooling around the boiler or dripping from pipes, it is essential to address this issue immediately.

Leaks can lead to water damage in your home and may indicate a problem with the pressure valve, heat exchanger, or other internal components. Ignoring leaks can lead to costly repairs and further complications, so it is advisable to call a professional as soon as possible.

Pilot Light Issues

If your boiler has a pilot light, it should burn with a steady blue flame. If the pilot light frequently goes out or changes colour (to yellow or orange), it may indicate a problem with the boiler’s thermocouple, which is responsible for keeping the pilot light lit. A faulty thermocouple could lead to safety issues, so it’s best to have it inspected and repaired by a qualified engineer.
